Dr Paul McCartney FRANZCO, FRACS, FRCOphth (UK) Cataract, Glaucoma & General Ophthalmology
Dr McCartney is the principal of Hobart Eye Surgeons, which he established in 1998. He is a consultant ophthamologist with considerable clinical, surgical, research and teaching experience and has been Head of Ophthalmology at the Royal Hobart Hospital for 12 years. Dr McCartney is currently recognised nationally and internationally as an ophthalmic surgeon at the leading edge of cataract surgery. As such, in 2006 he was the invited speaker for the launch of the ReSTOR pseudoaccommadative intraocular lens, Toric lens an microcoaxial cataract surgery.
Dr McCartney is amongst the initial group of surgeons in Australia invited to use the Alcon Acrysof Toric IOL and has run Toric IOL accreditation courses for surgeons in Singapore and Manilla in 2007. He spoke in Brisbane in April as part of the OCSO (Optimising Cataract Surgical Outcomes) lecture series on Ozil microcoaxial cataract surgery and attended the ASCRS conference in May in San Diego highlighting advances in cataract and refractive surgery.
Dr McCartney is actively involved with the East Timor Eye Project, teaching and performing surgery in Timor Leste and implementing a cataract audit program for this vouluneer organisation in the worlds newest country.
Dr McCartney is the lead investigator in an ongoing glaucoma medication trial involving the assessment of combination glaucoma medications. He is also one of the chief investigators in the Posurdex project treating Macular Oedema.
