Dr Nitin Verma Dip. NBE, FRANZCO, M MED MD General Ophthalmology, Cataract, Oculoplastics, Glaucoma & Medical Retina
We are pleased to announce that Dr Verma was awarded the RANZCO Distinguished Service Award in November 2006. This is a prestigious award and he has our warmest congratulations. Dr Verma is a close colleague of Dr McCartney and has been with Hobart Eye Surgeons for some six years. He is the Principal Investigator in the Visudyne Lucentis Study. Investigating the use of Lucentis and Visudyne in the treatment of Occult CNV macular degeneration.
Dr Verma continues to be actively involved in the treatment of macular degeneration. The use of Avastin and Lucentis injections, widely publicised in the media, is a major breakthrough in the treatment of the wet form of macular degeneration. The use of these injections has seen excellent results in what was previously and still remains, a potentially devastating and vision threatening disease. The importance of early referral cannot be over-emphasised.
Dr Verma is the treating investigator in the Posurdex Study, a trial of a new Dexamethasone implant for diabetic macular oedema. Hobart Eye Surgeons has been selected as one of several world-wide centres to take part in the assessment of this important new piece of ophthalmic drug delivery technology. Dr Verma leads the East Timor Eye Project. Our first Timorese ophthalmic registrar was in Hobart recently concentrating on learning techniques for laser photocoagulation and diabetic maculopathy.
