Diabetes eye screening and treatmentDiabetes can sometimes cause damage to blood vessels in the retina, the layer of tissue at the back of the eye that senses light. The damage affects the quality of vision and can get worse over time – a process called diabetic retinopathy. If not treated it eventually can lead to blindness. Any damage to the retina is permanent, and so it is vital that we detect problems early (which is why you should have an eye examination every year). With treatment the deterioration can be stopped. Most diabetic retinopathy can be managed with laser treatment in our rooms. It is a simple procedure, which we might need to repeat from time to time. Ask to see one of our specialists to learn more.
